Mastering basic vehicle control is essential for safe driving. Proper steering, braking, and acceleration allow you to maintain full control of your vehicle in a variety of conditions.
Steering:
-
Your hands should generally be positioned at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions on the steering wheel for optimal control.
-
Avoid gripping the wheel too tightly; maintain a firm but relaxed hold.
-
Use smooth, gradual steering movements, especially at higher speeds or in turns.
Braking:
-
Apply steady, even pressure on the brake pedal to slow down smoothly.
-
Do not “slam” on the brakes unless in an emergency situation.
-
Begin braking early when approaching stops to allow time for smooth deceleration.
-
Vehicles equipped with Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) allow for controlled braking while steering during emergency stops.
Acceleration:
-
Apply gradual pressure to the accelerator pedal to start moving smoothly.
-
Avoid sudden acceleration, which can reduce traction and control.
