Drivers must understand that they share the road with many types of road users who are more vulnerable in traffic situations. These include pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists.
Pedestrians:
-
Drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks.
-
Extra caution is required near schools, residential areas, and intersections.
Bicyclists:
-
Bicycles are considered vehicles and have the right to use most roadways.
-
Maintain at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist.
-
Watch for bicyclists at intersections, driveways, and when turning.
Motorcyclists:
-
Motorcycles have the same rights as other vehicles on the roadway.
-
Motorcycles can be harder to see due to their smaller size, and they may appear farther away than they are.
-
Allow a full lane for motorcycles and provide extra following distance.
Drivers must remain alert and courteous to these vulnerable road users at all times.
