Driving is a privilege — not a right — and that privilege comes with important legal and personal responsibilities.

Legal responsibilities:

  • Obey all traffic laws: Indiana drivers must comply with laws related to speed limits, right-of-way, stopping at signals and signs, and safe lane changes.

  • Insurance: Indiana requires every driver to carry minimum liability insurance coverage. Driving uninsured is illegal and can result in fines or license suspension.

  • Proper vehicle maintenance: Your vehicle must meet legal standards for safety (e.g., functioning brakes, lights, mirrors, and properly inflated tires).

  • Avoid impaired driving: It is illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that impairs your ability to drive safely. The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit in Indiana is 0.08%.

Personal responsibilities:

  • Drive attentively and defensively: This means always being aware of your surroundings and anticipating potential hazards.

  • Respect other road users: Yield to pedestrians, share the road with cyclists, and drive courteously.

  • Protect passengers: Always wear your seatbelt and ensure passengers do the same.

  • Avoid distractions: Using a mobile phone, eating, or adjusting controls while driving increases risk and reduces your ability to react quickly.

By understanding and embracing these responsibilities, you help keep Indiana’s roads safe for everyone.
