Regulatory signs tell drivers what they must do or must not do under the law. These signs are enforceable and failing to comply may result in a traffic violation.
Examples of regulatory signs:
-
STOP sign: Requires a complete stop at intersections or crosswalks.
-
YIELD sign: Requires slowing down and giving the right of way to cross traffic or pedestrians.
-
Speed Limit sign: Indicates the maximum lawful speed for that stretch of road.
-
No Parking sign: Indicates areas where parking is prohibited.
Warning signs alert drivers to potential hazards or conditions ahead where extra caution is required.
Examples of common warning signs:
-
Curve Ahead: Alerts drivers to a curve in the roadway.
-
Pedestrian Crossing: Indicates an area where pedestrians may be crossing.
-
Deer Crossing: Alerts drivers to areas where animals frequently cross the road.
-
School Zone: Indicates proximity to a school and the need for reduced speed and heightened caution.
Warning signs are usually yellow and diamond-shaped with black symbols or text.
