Pavement markings work in conjunction with traffic signs and signals to regulate, warn, and guide drivers. Proper understanding of pavement markings helps drivers stay in the correct lane, determine passing zones, and understand the intended flow of traffic.

Key pavement markings:

  • Single broken white lines: Separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction; lane changes permitted when safe.

  • Solid white lines: Discourage lane changes but are not illegal to cross when necessary and safe.

  • Double solid white lines: Prohibit lane changes.

  • Single broken yellow lines: Separate lanes of traffic moving in opposite directions; passing allowed when safe.

  • Solid yellow line next to broken yellow line: Passing permitted if the broken line is on your side and safe; prohibited if the solid line is on your side.

  • Double solid yellow lines: No passing permitted in either direction.

  • White arrows on pavement: Indicate permitted lane movements such as turns or straight-through travel.

  • Crosswalk markings: Indicate pedestrian crossing areas.

  • Stop lines: Indicate where vehicles must stop at an intersection or before a crosswalk.
