Understanding right-of-way rules is critical for preventing collisions and ensuring smooth traffic flow. Right-of-way rules determine who must yield in different driving situations.

Key right-of-way principles:

  • Drivers must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

  • At a four-way stop, the first vehicle to stop should proceed first. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the left yields to the vehicle on the right.

  • Drivers must yield to vehicles already in an intersection or roundabout.

  • When turning left, drivers must yield to oncoming traffic going straight.

  • When entering a road from a driveway or alley, drivers must yield to vehicles on the main road.

  • Emergency vehicles using sirens or flashing lights always have the right of way.

Drivers must also be cautious around school buses:
When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, traffic in both directions must stop unless there is a physical barrier or median separating lanes.
