Speed limits are set to ensure safe driving conditions for all road users and can vary depending on the type of road, area, and conditions.
Common Indiana speed limits:
-
Urban areas: 30 mph unless posted otherwise.
-
School zones: 25 mph when children are present.
-
Rural highways: 55 mph unless posted otherwise.
-
Interstate highways: 70 mph unless reduced by signage.
Drivers are required to adjust their speed when conditions demand greater caution, such as:
-
During poor weather (rain, snow, fog)
-
In heavy traffic
-
When approaching intersections or pedestrian areas
Even when no specific lower speed limit is posted, Indiana law requires drivers to operate at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for conditions.
